The word “топить” has two meanings: to heat (connected with the heating system) and to drown (to kill somebody by putting in the water with no air).
Ставить – to put, ставить в угол – punishment, to put the child in the corner to think about his behaviour.
Сейчас в России начался отопительный сезон. В домах есть центральное отопление (central heating) и люди не контролируют сами отопление. Они ждут, когда отопление включат (switch on).
That’s why we have a lot of jokes about central heating.
